Here are answers to common questions clients ask about our psychologists, counselling services and mental health support at Happy Minds Psychology in Geelong and via telehealth across Australia.
No referral is strictly required to make an appointment. However, to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a valid referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP or psychiatrist.
Continuity is an important element of effective psychological treatment. Therefore, we require 2 business days’ notice for all appointment cancellations. This allows us the time needed to offer clinician appointments to other clients who might need them, as well as provide timely alternatives for the client who needs to cancel their appointment.
Cancellations made under 2 business days before the appointment will incur the full session fee. (please refer to our Session Fees for details).
Cancellations of confirmed appointments made with 2–3 business days’ notice may incur a $50 cancellation fee.
Cancellations must be made during business hours. (9am-5pm, Monday to Friday)

A provisional psychologist has completed their academic training and is completing supervised practice under our principal psychologist. Medicare rebates do not apply to sessions with a provisional psychologist, and fees are adjusted accordingly.
We see clients aged 6 years and older. For children under 6, we work with parents to support the child’s development and wellbeing.
This varies depending on your presenting concerns and readiness for therapy. Some clients notice progress within about six sessions when they engage actively in therapy work and apply insights between sessions.
Your first session will begin with basic paperwork and consent forms covering confidentiality, fees and session information. After this, your psychologist will explore the issues that brought you to therapy and start collaboratively developing a plan tailored to your needs.
It’s normal to feel nervous before seeing a psychologist—but there’s no need to be scared. Sessions are confidential and conducted in a respectful, supportive environment. Your psychologist is there to help you feel safe and understood.
Psychologists complete extensive training and supervised practice before becoming registered with AHPRA. They provide talk therapies and behavioural support. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and specialise in the medical treatment of mental health conditions.
In Australia, the title “psychologist” is legally protected and requires registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. A counsellor is not a protected title and does not necessarily indicate professional registration. At Happy Minds Psychology, all counselling services are delivered by fully registered psychologists.
Standard sessions with a psychologist are approximately 50 minutes in length.
Yes. All information shared in sessions is confidential, with exceptions only if there is risk of harm or specific legal requirements.

Sarah-Jayne Duryea is the Founder and Principal Psychologist at Happy Minds Psychology, with a strong clinical focus on supporting people in high-pressure and high-impact roles. She has a special interest in working with surrogacy teams, first responders, frontline workers, and individuals in demanding careers, including athletes, performers, and professionals navigating chronic stress, burnout, or trauma exposure.
Sarah-Jayne also works extensively in perinatal psychology, professional coaching, and clinical supervision. She is passionate about helping fellow professionals — including psychologists, counsellors, and leaders — build sustainable skills, emotional resilience, and effective strategies to thrive both personally and within their teams. She provides professional coaching and board-approved supervision, with a particular commitment to supporting provisional psychologists through the registration pathway.
In her family-building work, Sarah-Jayne supports individuals and couples pursuing parenthood through IVF, surrogacy, donor conception, and adoption. As an ANZICA-registered practitioner, she provides independent counselling and psychological assessments for surrogacy arrangements, offering informed, compassionate, and ethical support throughout the process.

As a Registered Psychologist and Psychosexual Therapist, my practice focuses on the connection between mental wellbeing and sexual health. In therapy, I aim to provide an inclusive, trauma-informed space where individuals can safely explore the often vulnerable parts of themselves and their sexual and emotional wellbeing.
I support clients navigating a wide range of emotional, sexual and reproductive experiences. Such experiences may include changes in sexual desire, arousal & orgasm concerns, sexual pain, as well as the complexities of infertility and assisted reproductive technology. I also support individuals navigating major life transitions, and more general mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, relationship issues (including diverse relationship structures), and stress.

I’m a Registered Psychologist with a particular interest in supporting women with ADHD and Autism. As a parent of three myself, I have a particular interest in supporting parents through the demands and complexities of family life, and particularly mothers who are finding their way back to themselves amidst the chaos of family life.
I aim to provide a space that is warm, genuine, and free of judgement – somewhere you can openly express your thoughts and feelings without fear of getting it wrong. If you’re not sure where to start or what you need, that’s completely okay – we can figure that out together. I
