Frequently asked questions about our counselling and support services

Here are answers to common questions clients ask about our psychologists, counselling services and mental health support at Happy Minds Psychology in Geelong and via telehealth across Australia.

What are your appointment fees?
  • Provisional psychologist: $155 per 50-minute session (no Medicare rebate available).
  • Registered psychologist: $270 per 50-minute session (Medicare rebate applies with a Mental Health Treatment Plan).
  • Principal psychologist: $300 per 50-minute session (Medicare rebate applies with a Mental Health Treatment Plan).
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

No referral is strictly required to make an appointment. However, to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a valid referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP or psychiatrist.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require at least 48 hours’ notice for appointment cancellations.

  • Cancellations within 24–48 hours may incur a $50 fee if we cannot fill the session.
  • Cancellations within 24 hours incur the full session fee.
If you have extenuating circumstances, please contact our team to discuss.
What is a provisional psychologist?

A provisional psychologist has completed their academic training and is completing supervised practice under our principal psychologist. Medicare rebates do not apply to sessions with a provisional psychologist, and fees are adjusted accordingly.

What age range do you see?

We see clients aged 6 years and older. For children under 6, we work with parents to support the child’s development and wellbeing.

How long does it take to feel better?

This varies depending on your presenting concerns and readiness for therapy. Some clients notice progress within about six sessions when they engage actively in therapy work and apply insights between sessions.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session will begin with basic paperwork and consent forms covering confidentiality, fees and session information. After this, your psychologist will explore the issues that brought you to therapy and start collaboratively developing a plan tailored to your needs.

Am I likely to be scared or uncomfortable?

It’s normal to feel nervous before seeing a psychologist—but there’s no need to be scared. Sessions are confidential and conducted in a respectful, supportive environment. Your psychologist is there to help you feel safe and understood.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Psychologists complete extensive training and supervised practice before becoming registered with AHPRA. They provide talk therapies and behavioural support. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and specialise in the medical treatment of mental health conditions.

What is the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist?

In Australia, the title “psychologist” is legally protected and requires registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. A counsellor is not a protected title and does not necessarily indicate professional registration. At Happy Minds Psychology, all counselling services are delivered by fully registered psychologists.

Do you offer Medicare or private health insurance rebates?
  • Medicare rebates apply if you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP.
  • Private health insurance may provide a partial rebate if your policy includes psychological counselling extras. Contact your insurer to confirm details.
How long are sessions?

Standard sessions with a psychologist are approximately 50 minutes in length.

Is my information kept private?

Yes. All information shared in sessions is confidential, with exceptions only if there is risk of harm or specific legal requirements.

Do you accept NDIS and WorkCover clients?
